Tomorrow one of my dreams becomes a reality.
Tomorrow I start work as a real estate agent!
This has been a goal of mine for several years now, but I never thought the opportunity would come this soon.
I started exploring the possibility kind of by accident back in December of 2013. I stumbled on a Facebook post by a local team of realtors saying they were "looking to hire." So, on the off chance that they might be hiring a marketing role I sent them a message with my resume.
Shortly after I was called for an interview, did some personality assessments with them (a very long, very thorough process) and soon realized they weren't hiring for marketing - they were hiring buyers' agents. I ended up getting an offer right before Christmas, but the timing just wasn't right for our family. Looking ahead we knew Steven would be going part-time in the next few months and it didn't seem wise for me to step into a sales role, where I would be solely a commissioned agent, when I had NO prior sales experience.
Yes, I did say NO prior sales experience.
Well, I worked in retail sales at Apple for 6 months. So NO sales isn't entirely true. But, retail sales, and retail sales at Apple aren't exactly rocket science.
Turning down their first offer was one of the hardest things I've had to do professionally. I wanted that job, with that company SO badly. But God unmistakably closed the door and in the end gave me complete peace that we had made the right decision.
Even though we had turned down that opportunity I went ahead and took the necessary licensing courses needed to become a REALTOR®. If you follow my blog you'll know that's what going back to school was all about.
Fast forward to just a few weeks ago the same group called me up again with a new opportunity; an opportunity that would be base salary + commission. That's exactly what we needed.
I interviewed again, Steven and I met with the company owner and his wife, I was given an offer, and we accepted the next day.
The whole no sales experience thing has me a tiny bit scared, but I'm totally up for the challenge and I can't wait to see where this takes us!
