The Story of Us: Dating

Life LoveAnaleisa LathamComment

With Valentines Day tomorrow I thought it might be fun to relive the story of how Steven and I met.

It was 2010 and I was working at a local accounting and golf course management company. I wasn't entirely happy with my work situation but didn't really know what to do about it. I heard an Apple store was opening in our local mall I thought, you know, I love Apple products and that would be a good way to meet people and make connections. So I applied in July and was called in for an an interview the next month.
Steven was already working at this Apple store - he had been hired in the summer for the new store opening team.

The first round of interviews at any Apple store is in a huge group with everyone else in the first round of hiring plus several employees who currently work at that particular store. They sit you down, show you a short highlighting how great the company truly is, chat for a little and then break you out into smaller groups to go through some "what would you do if..." scenarios. The leaders of those small groups are the employees. It just so happened that I was in a group with Steven. Our group was fun, and we had a good time.

At the end of the evening you all go home and the employees evaluate each applicant. Everyone one of them has to give you a pass to make it to the next round. Apparently, as the story goes, the leaders of the group I was in made it around to my name and Steven couldn't even remember me! I think he words were something along the lines of, "O, she wasn't very memorable." (Of course, I didn't find this out until a few months into our relationship when HE himself told this story. And it will follow him for all of time...)

I made it through that round, had another interview with the store leader and was hired part-time.

I don't remember the first day I noticed Steven, but quickly I found myself gravitating towards him. He was always kind and happy to help with questions, seemed like a gentleman, and didn't have blue hair, piercings, or tattoos. (Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against any of the above named things. He was just more like me in that he did not possess them.) At this point though there still wasn't any real chemistry there on either side.

Fast-forward to one Sunday evening in March a group of us from the store were going out together to celebrate a co-worker who was transferring to a different store. I found myself at the dinner table next to Steven. And the rest is kinda history...

We talked all evening and into the early hours of the morning. Before we said our goodbye's he asked for my number. We texted a bit throughout the week. Work was uncomfortable for me because at this point I just wasn't sure what was going on!

The next weekend, same scenario, celebrating a co-worker moving on. After dinner we went for a walk and he brought up the dating subject, basically asking if we could. For some reason I was speechless and the only thing that came to mind was, "Why?" We look back on that and laugh now. He hardly knew me, I hardly knew him, and I wanted to know what in the world he saw in me that made him want to pursue a relationship. I didn't know this at the time, but Steven is the master of words; he came up with some excellent statement in answer to my question and apparently it was good enough for me!

I eventually got a new full-time job and stopped working at the Apple store.

I met his family in August of that year when they took us to dinner to celebrate his birthday.
It wasn't until November, right before Thanksgiving later, that I took him to meet my family.

We had our ups and downs while dating, probably more than other couples. One thing that always impressed me was how patient and constant he was. No matter what happened he knew he wanted to be with me.

These pictures are just some of my favorites from our dating days. Such happy times!

Tomorrow I'll be back with our engagement story!
